A major focus of this recent research has been on defensive villages built on mesa tops during the 14 years of Pueblo independence. Historians have relied primarily on Spanish accounts to understand the period, but recently, archaeologists have begun to uncover a richer picture of Pueblo life in the aftermath of what some scholars call the “first American revolution.” Working closely with Pueblo communities to study sites established after the Revolt, archaeologists have found evidence for tremendous change in Pueblo society as well as widespread revival of traditions that had been suppressed by the Spanish. “In many ways it shaped the world we live in today.”

“The Revolt period is still so important to Pueblo identity,” says University of Pennsylvania archaeologist Joseph Aguilar, a member of San Ildefonso Pueblo. For the next decade, apart from occasional Spanish military expeditions, the Native American peoples of New Mexico enjoyed total independence. Within a few days, they had driven virtually all Spaniards out of the province. On that date, Pueblo warriors from 19 separate villages carried out a coordinated attack on Spanish missionaries and colonists across New Mexico. That conflict was the culmination of what is known today as the Pueblo Revolt, an indigenous uprising that began on August 10, 1680. A natural fortress, Black Mesa was the scene of dramatic events in 1694, when Pueblo warriors encamped on its summit withstood a months-long Spanish siege. The land it’s on belongs to the people of San Ildefonso Pueblo, whose ancestors have farmed near the base of the mesa since at least A.D.
#BLACK MESA NEW MEXICO DRIVER#
You have to find the fairway off the tee for any chance of taking a birdie here, so 3 wood is a good play if your driver hasn't been reliable up to this point in the round. An isolated volcanic outcropping, Black Mesa rises high above the floodplain of northern New Mexico’s Rio Grande Valley. The fairway climbs 35 feet enroute to the highly undulated green where if you miss left your ball will quickly tumble down to the native area. A pair of bunkers on the right side of the fairway pinch the landing zone to its tightest width, but if they are avoided then a great opportunity presents itself to reach the green in two. Signature Hole: 16th Hole – 536 Yard Par 5 – The view you'll find on a lot of Black Mesa's marketing material is from the 16th tee that affords an impressive view of the 16th fairway that carves its way naturally between the stark hills framing each side.

The biggest letdown by far was the poor conditioning that existed during my visit fortunately that can always change.

Black Mesa is highlighted with an impressive collection of par 3s, unforgettable par 5s, and engaging elevation changes that lead to a variety of enjoyable shots. The links course is void of any trees and thus subject to the crossing winds that can change the way the course plays on a daily basis. The Baxter Spann layout north of Santa Fe is carved in among high desert terrain, rocks, and arroyos which lends to hosting undulated fairways and greens, blind shots, and over 100 bunkers. What to Expect: Black Mesa features some of the most stunning vistas and terrain an inland golf course can enjoy with a setting distant from highways and city lights. There is no doubt that Black Mesa has one of the most intriguing layouts in the West and is a must-see in New Mexico, but until the conditioning is improved the course won't play as the Top 100 layout Mr. The thin turf throughout the course wasn't ideal either. With weeds growing all over in the rough, bunkers, and often in the fairways, there was a point I was questioning why I was even there.

The Takeaway: Black Mesa has the bones to be a really good course but is an unfortunate example of what happens when a course isn't properly maintained.
